E-Books Now Compatible with Kindle

Good news for Kindle fans! Now Kindle users can enjoy borrowing e-books at Fresno County Public Library. The Library offers roughly 2500 titles for Kindle and adds more all the time.

To borrow a Kindle e-book:

  1. Go to www.fresnolibrary.org and click on the “Download Books” button at the top.
  2. Click on the Overdrive graphic that looks like this: Overdrive graphic
  3. On the left-hand side you’ll see a “Featured Collection” button. Hover over the button to get to the button "View All Kindle Books" for a full listing of books that are Kindle compatible.
  4. After selecting a book you want to read, click on Add to Cart under the Format/Kindle information.
  5. Follow instructions on your screen from there. You’ll need to be either connected to your computer via wifi or physically connect your Kindle to a computer with a USB cord.

If you run into trouble you can call your local library branch or follow the instructions on the website for online support. You can borrow an e-book for 3 weeks; the book “expires” after 3 weeks and disappears from your Kindle. And, just like printed books, it’s absolutely free to borrow e-books from the library.

Wondering what other people in Fresno County are reading on their Kindles? Here are top titles checked out this month and downloaded to Kindles:

  • The Help by Kathryn Stockett
  • Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
  • Smokin’ Seventeen by Janet Evanovich
  • Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo

If you do start borrowing e-books for your Kindle, you’re in good company. During the month of September (when e-books became available for use on Kindle), nationwide library e-book checkouts were nearly triple than the total for ALL of 2010.

Don’t have a Kindle but do have an iPad, Nook, iPhone, Sony eReader, Android, or any other e-book device? You’re also in good company. Since we began loaning e-books in January, almost 2,000 Fresno County citizens have used the Library to borrow e-books on all of the e-readers named above.
